Toma Ikuta (生田 斗真, Ikuta Toma^?, born October 7, 1984 in Hokkaidō) is a Japanese television and stage actor under the supervision of Johnny’s Entertainment Inc.

His family consists of a father, a mother named Hiromi, a younger brother named Ryuusei, and a dog named JAM-chan. His father wanted to name him Ikuta Tamegorou, but his mother changed it to Toma because it was easier to say. He used to be called Toma, Touma, or Toma-chan by his family and friends. Younger juniors in the agency used to call him Toma-san and that morphed to Tomasu. This name was used to be his “trademark” as he hosted a show named Meitantei Tomasu in the Shounen Club program.

• He used to be in a variety show for kids, then was offered to enter Johnny’s Jimusho (Johnny’s Entertainment) at the age of twelve, and started to participate under Johnny’s Jr.

• Soon he was grouped with some members of the current J-pop unit, Arashi. Together, they formed a group called M.A.I.N. (which stands for each member’s family name: Matsumoto, Aiba, Ikuta, and Ninomiya).

• After M.A.I.N., Toma was grouped again with a Jr. unit named B.I.G. (Bad Image Generation) along with ten other popular Juniors of that time. This is the time when he met Tomohisa Yamashita (NEWS), or YamaPi, with whom he is still very good friends. Soon, B.I.G. was reduced to just Toma and YamaPi.

• In 2002, upon Tackey & Tsubasa’s graduation from Johnny’s Jr., the group 4Tops was formed in order to replace them as leaders. The group consisted of 4 members: Ikuta, YamaPi, Jun Hasegawa and Shunsuke Kazama. Their job was to host Shounen Club and to lead the Johnny’s Jr.

• April 2003, NEWS was formed with YamaPi as the leader. This group debuted along with 9 members from Johnny’s Jr. so 4Tops became 3Tops, and not so long after that, they disbanded, and each member started working solo.

• As of June 2006, he became part of an unofficial group within Johnny’s Entertainment called “No Border”, which also includes YamaPi, Jun Matsumoto, Shingo Murakami (Kanjani8), Atsuhiro Satou (former Hikaru Genji), Koichi Domoto (Kinki Kids), Tatsuya Yamaguchi (TOKIO), and Hideaki Takizawa (Tackey & Tsubasa). It was formed when the 8 members from different JE groups met up for dinner and decided to name themselves “NO BORDER”. They are known to interact freely, bypassing the senpai-kouhai relationships normally formed by Johnny’s members. There is a 7-part round-robin on their J-webs about the formation of the group. Each member has a specific colour – White, Black, Red, Pink, Purple, Gold, Blue, and Grey. However, who holds which colour is still unknown.

• Ikuta has already participated in numerous performances of Musical Stage Plays. One of his biggest breakthrough was his first leading role in the Shinkansen*NEXUS stageplay “Cat in the Red Boots“, as TOMA-sama. Furthermore, it’s been decided that in October 2007, he will cast in a new stage play titled, “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” which will be held in Osaka and Tokyo.

• Ikuta had his own temporary J-web named Tomagoto (Toma’s words) where he could write his thoughts and experiences, but because it was temporary, it eventually came to an end. However, after a number of fan requests, they continued the series again and it was named “Tomagoto Returns” but read as “Tomagoto Hyper”. Being temporary, it ended last February 28, 2007. He also has a J-web collaboration with Musical Academy called KinToMA (Kindan no Tomagoto) and last June 7, 2007 they decided to continue Tomagoto, under the name “Tomagoto NEO”.

• Ikuta also has his own corner on Wink Up Magazine titled “Ikuta Toma no Ikita Kotoba”. On this corner he used to talk about “heart-felt” things, and he often writes about his mom. He still lives with his parents.

TRIVIA!!

1. Ikuta was the one who came up with the name NO BORDER.
2. He is a huge fan of Backstreet Boys. He even begged Music Station’s staff to let him in the studio to watch Backstreet Boys rehearse.
3. He loves to collect sunglasses and sneakers. Currently, he has about fifteen pairs of sneakers, and a cabinet full of his sunglasses collection. He also collects soccer uniforms and various toy figures like Gundam, Spider-Man, and Star Wars.
4. He used to call his mother “Okaa-chan” when he was little, but after being teased by M.A.I.N’s members, he called her “Okaa-san”.
5. Toma is also a fan of X Japan, especially of popular guitarist Hideto Matsumoto. He once talked on the phone with Subaru Shibutani (Kanjani8) for an hour, just discussing X-Japan. He and his younger brother Ryuusei are fans of GLAY and they attend every single concert during his spare time.
6. He is a big fan of rock music. He often listens to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

10. He and Oguri were the ones who came up with the nickname Horikittie for Maki Horikita who they acted together on Hanazakari no Kimitachi E.
11. He guested twice in Maki Horikita’s occasional radio variety show in July. He told her that mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness overcame him during the two sessions because it’s his first time having an in-depth and happy one-on-one conversation with a girl. However, he added that he was rather happy that he experienced it first with Maki, who was mutually glad to have him as a guest.

Ikuta Toma was born in Sapporo, 07 October 1984. His father almost named him Ikuta Tamegorou, luckily his mother rejected it and named him Ikuta Toma. Since he was little, he was very energetic and cheerful. He has one little brother but never mentions him to protect his privacy. His family is a happy family and quite close to each other. Toma even mentions his mother sometimes in Ikuta Toma no Ikita Kotoba (his corner at Wink Up magazine).
In 11 February 1996, he entered Johnny Jimusho as his mother sent him the application. Johnny Jimusho is a famous male idol agency in Japan. He entered as Tokyo Jr. From a long time ago, Tokyo Jr. always got more opportunities than Kansai Jr. which made a cold war between them. But Toma can get along well with Kansai Jr., such as Nishikido Ryo, even though he was Tokyo Jr. Not everyone can do that. And he gets along with his seniors such as Domoto Koichi, Takizawa Hideaki and Imai Tsubasa, his other Tokyo Jr. friends like Matsumoto Jun, Aiba Masaki, Yamashita Tomohisa, Tanaka Koki, Kohara Yuki and even his juniors like Akanishi Jin.
Right after he entered Johnny Jimusho, he entered a group called MAIN which stands for its members’ names, Matsumoto Jun, Aiba Masaki, Ikuta Toma and Ninomiya Kazunari. Then 6 months later Yamashita Tomohisa, known as Yamapi, entered Johnny Jimusho. Yamapi gets along very well with Toma. They became close in a short time, even closer than their previous friends. Soon after that, new groups formed and Toma was placed in a group called BIG with Yamashita Tomohisa, Kazama Shunsuke, Hasegawa Jun, Shunta Miyagi, Yuta Fukuda, Tanaka Kouki, Goseki Koichi, Masaya Hattori and Ito Tatsuya. However, Toma soon became the ace of the group and become a very popular Tokyo Jr. Then at the end of 2002, his seniors and best friends, Tackey and Tsubasa debuted and Tackey created a group as the new leader of Johnny Jr. called Four Tops with Toma, Yamashita, Kazama and Jun as the members. Everyone was optimistic that this group would be successful and debut too. Toma didn’t even enter college to concentrate on his career so he could debut with his best friends.
Johnny Jr. could be called “tools.” If you want to succeed you have to be obediant to the management. Johnny Jrs. and their debut seniors don’t even get royalty from their CD’s selling or something like that. They simply get their monthly salary. Toma is no exception, but he still has his own style and will, maybe that’s why on September 2003, Four Tops tore apart. Yamashita has a CD debut with a new group called NEWS, which stands for North East West South with a lot of Toma’s Juniors while Toma himself, Kazapon and HaseJun remain as ordinary Johnny Jr. without any group. But even so, Toma said nothing to Yamapi, no hatred at all. He even supported Yamapi at the Volleyball event that become NEWS debut and kept his sadness to himself. As time goes by, Toma’s popularity decreased a lot because the management didn’t give him a lot of jobs. His jobs after he quit from Shounen Club were hosted by Four Tops before only as side cast of some Stageplays. He didn’t even play dramas anymore like he used to, maybe he was but only as a side character who only appeared once or twice. Even some new fans don’t know anything about him. Many harmful rumours came around, like he only pretended to be close to Yamashita to gain popularity which is not true at all. And don’t think that Johnny Jimusho is in a safe place for your children, even though there’s a lot of small Juniors, because there’s a lot of rumours that some sexual molestation happens there. Even some former idols who have quit from JE published their experiences like Kita Koji who published 12 volumes of his diary about the abuse at the agency. Quiting Johnny Jimusho as well is hard to do because the agency’s power is big. The agency can make the ex-member of their agency nonexistent in the entertainment business anymore. Kohara Yuhi who quit Johnny Jimusho at year 2000, went to college and works as a salaryman.
Nowadays Toma is only an ordinary Johnny Jr. with a lack of jobs who did not enter college and even lost his popularity with his smaller Juniors. His friends, like the ex-members of MAIN, have debuted as Arashi and become popular singers. But, he still has his own faith and confidence to continue work in the entertaiment business as a Johnny Jr. He doesn’t know the word surrender and faces the cruel reality by himself. He doesn’t blame anyone, which many people do, for his current life and he continues on with his life.
